FAQ's

Is this program right for my child?

Well, when choosing a school, you must first understand clearly what you or your child expect to gain from learning Martial Arts.  You may want your child to learn self-confidence and respect while having fun at the same time.  Or you may want your child to learn how to deal with the mean, and unfriendly bully who keeps smearing your child's face in the dirt at recess.   At Yang's Martial Arts Centre, our children's program are second to none. With the unfortunate decline in the quality of education in the public school system, many parents come to view the martial arts as a necessary part of their child's personal and educational development.  Our professional instructors can really help supplement your child's education and provide a much needed form of exercise and personal development.

How long are the classes?

Classes are not necessarily more valuable if they are longer.  Class length depends on the age of the class.  Our kids classes last about 45 minutes.  Studies on attention spans have shown that 30 to 45 minutes are about the max for most kids.

Why Martial Arts Program helps out other sports?

Let's face it, some kids just are a little slow at developing physical coordination.  These are the poor little girls and boys who get picked last in team games, which doesn't do much for a child's self-confidence.  But unlike basketball, or hockey, Martial Arts is an individual sport where everyone can go at his or her own pace.  If a child has a trouble with a certain technique, he isn't letting the whole team down.  That's why so many kids have bad experiences in team sports and give them up only to be deprived of all the advantages of physical activity.  Yes, hockey, soccer, baseball, and basketball are all great Nova Scotia past times that can teach children things like the value of hard work, sportsmanship, and teamwork.  But there is simply no other physical activity like Martial Arts Program that can provide as much internal and individual character training.  Good Martial Arts Program teaches self-respect, self-commitment, self-esteem, self-discipline, self-control and much more!

Does my child have to be athletic to enroll?

The beauty of our martial arts program is you don't have to be an overly athletic kid to be good at it.  Everyone who starts it's there first time.  Children who train in any type of martial arts can and will become outstanding students under only on condition -- that they stick with it!  Soon kids develop a great sense of respect for themselves as they start to see the improvements and incredible feats that can be accomplished through a little hard work and determination.  You should see the faces of kids who break their first board or receive there first belt.

What age can a child start?

Our experience has shown that children ages 6 (depends on child) and up will be able to take the greatest advantage from Our program.  Starting at the age of 6, children are eligible to participate in our trial program, which allows our instructors to work with them one on one and evaluate their readiness for group classes.  Our staff will use their experience to recommend the best course of action for you to take with your child.

How many classes should my child per week attend?

For beginners we recommend two classes per week, and if eligible for the black belt program 3 times a week.

How long will it take my child to attain a Black Belt?

The minimum time requirement is 3 years.

Will martial arts training make my child too aggressive?

Our program, children learn that the martial arts is not an act of violence, but the art of how to handle themselves in a problematic situation.  Aggression should be channelled into assertiveness to increase a child's self esteem and build discipline and character.

What are the chances of getting injured?

The chances of getting injured are very small since the training should be constantly supervised with safety in mind.

Are the classes fun?

The reason our program is so successful is because we make the classes fun and exciting.  We learned a long time ago that if kids are having fun, they learn much faster.

When can my child enroll?

Students may enroll at any time.  Our program is ongoing and not based around a specific time frame.  Space it limited so make an appointment today for a Introductory Session.
